Description

Key Assignment Draft

In the last few weeks as a human resources (HR) consultant at Elora Jean & Co., you have reviewed several issues, made recommendations, and developed policies. In addition to the issues previously reviewed, the owner has advised you of the following situation:

A charge was recently filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) by an employee. The charge states that two female employees in one of the nonunion satellite offices were subject to repeated and unwelcome sexual advances by their male supervisor. The charge further states that the two women previously complained to the supervisor’s immediate superior, letting him know that they felt uncomfortable and would like the behavior to stop. The harassment did not stop; rather, it continued over a period of 3 months. At that point, the female employees decided that the company would not help. They decided to file a claim with the EEOC, stating they were being sexually harassed at work.

The owner is certain that the company can put together a response that will clear it of the charge, and she asked if you felt they had a strong case. You state that you are not legal counsel for Elora Jean & Co.; however, you request permission to investigate the claim before giving your thoughts on the company’s documentation for legal defense.

Given your knowledge of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, you are concerned with Elora Jean & Co.’s ability to defend the EEOC charge. You plan to engage in your own investigation into the claim to learn more about the complaints made, who had knowledge, what type of investigation was conducted (if any), and what actions were taken. As part of your investigation, you learn that Elora Jean & Co. does not have any policies or procedures relating to sexual harassment in the workplace.

You need to address and advise the owner of Elora Jean & Co. on courses of action. Present your evaluation in a written memo to the owner. As you prepare your strategy for investigating the claim, consider the following:

• What is the legal definition of sexual harassment?

• What investigation process should Elora Jean & Co. have engaged in when the claims were first made? Why will that be important to the defense of the EEOC charge?

• What is the legal liability for Elora Jean & Co. if the EEOC investigation finds the charge to be factual with employer knowledge of the events? Consider the options of mediation versus litigation with regard to organizational cost.

• What elements would you recommend be included in a sexual harassment policy?

• What should Elora Jean & Co. do to prevent this type of charge in the future?

• Research and briefly summarize a recent case of sexual harassment that was won by the employee. Provide information relating to the financial outcome of the case.

• What implications does the Civil Rights Act of 1991 have for employers?

• What are your overall recommendations for the owner with regard to preparing a response to the EEOC charge?

Please submit your assignment.

Assignment 3: Administrative Law Instructions

Read all instructions and the grading rubric carefully before writing this assignment. You are responsible for reading and understanding these documents.

For this assignment, you are required to choose between producing a PowerPoint presentation, a video presentation, or writing a research paper. This assignment must focus on the relationship between administrative law and public administration.

Read Exercise 8 in the Dresang text, the Metzger article, and conduct your own research; then you will draft a 5–7-page research paper or a 9–10-minute presentation. In your paper/presentation, you must explain the relationship between, and impact of, Administrative Law on Public Administration.

 Research Paper

If you elect to write a research paper for this assignment, the text of this research paper must be 5–7 pages (not including title page, reference page, and any appendices). This paper must be in current APA format with 1-inch margins and 12-pt Times New Roman font. A title page and reference page must also be included. You must include citations to at least 4–7 appropriate sources (in addition to the course textbooks, assigned readings, and the Bible) to fully support your assertions and conclusions. This assignment draws heavily from the assigned readings for this module/week and you are expected to illustrate your understanding of those sources.

Overcoming Resistance

In the article by Weber (2015), there is a statement about the importance of engaging those who will be impacted by change in the process of implementing change. The article further relates that initial efforts to foster change in the organization’s strategic planning process were unsuccessful in part because of lack of engagement. Resistance to change and lack of trust are common experiences when an organization or community engages in change efforts.

In your initial post, discuss the principles for dealing with opposition or resistance in change efforts for the Riverbend City Strategic Planning Committee, as described in the media piece in the Studies for this unit. Is resistance a normal part of the process? Can it be used in the effort to promote change? How? Discuss the resistance presented by one of the members of the Riverbend City Strategic Planning Committee and critique the response or method of addressing the resistance that was used by the group leader.

a Logic Model as a Strategic Planning Tool

Using a Logic Model as a Strategic Planning Tool

In your readings for this week, Watson and Hoefer (2014) provide a general overview of using logic models to define a problem and identify inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes.

In your initial post, discuss how application of a logic model would be different for a small nonprofit organization, a large federal agency, or the development of a policy for a specific human service program. How would the leader for each of these organizations engage the participants in the process? Cite examples from the reading.

Requirements

Using the scenario from the Staffing Plan for a Growing Business Assignment, write a 6–7 page paper in which you:

  1. Identify three job requirements (e.g., needed certifications, previous work experience, external influences, etc.) that could apply to your chosen scenario. Determine two ways these requirements could impact staffing at your organization. Next, suggest one strategy that you could utilize to ensure that all applicants meet the identified job requirements for your organization. Justify your response.

Next, analyze the effect of the five identified selection criteria on long-term employee retention and preservation of organizational knowledge. Justify your response.
  5. Suggest two assessment methods that you could employ to select new employees for your organization and then analyze the validity and reliability of each method in regards to the job your organization is offering. 6. Go to Strayer Library to locate at least three quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as quality resources.

What opportunities exist to infuse social media into the process?

Creating Alignment

Review the “six-pack approach” at the beginning of Part III, Chapter 8, of Mastering the Challenges of Leading Change (linked in Resources) and pay attention to the three steps of finding common ground, finding common metrics, and creating a sense of urgency. Also, choose one of the four models for implementing change in Table 9.2 on page 305 of your Organizational Change: An Action-Oriented Toolkit text. For this discussion, compare and contrast an approach for managing group dynamics with a model of change, and respond to the following:

  • Which of the approaches for creating alignment or engaging others is best for leading change in your organization?
  • What opportunities exist to infuse social media into the process?

The Role of Teams in Organizational Change

Introduction

Successful implementation of organizational change is dependent in part on the success of people and teams working together effectively. For this assessment, you will develop a PowerPoint presentation for senior managers in the organization. In this presentation, you will assess the current state of a team or group and then develop strategies to initiate and facilitate group change.

Preparation

Use the University Library to locate at least one resource that deals with helping teams or groups to change.

Scenario

In your previous assignment, you wrote a memo that maps out how your recommended changes will impact other roles within the organization and how to manage potential points of resistance to change. After your supervisor’s boss championed your recommendations in a series of meetings with other upper management, they have requested that you attend an upcoming meeting to present on strategies for approaching change within small groups and teams that may be impacted by your change recommendations. How can a selected group or team be made more effective and ready to respond to the implementation of your ideas for organizational change? What models of group effectiveness might provide a solid framework for this important preparatory work?

Your Role

Imagine that you work in any organization you choose in any position you like. For the sake of simplicity, you may choose to imagine your present position at a company where you already work. You may use the same organization(s) you chose for Assessments 2 and 3. Whatever your other responsibilities, you are now also tasked with providing change leadership within the organization.

Requirements

Select a team or group that is in need of change in your selected organization. Then complete the following in a PowerPoint presentation (with speaker’s notes) for senior managers in the organization:

  • Explain a model of group effectiveness in relation to the selected team or group.
  • Assess the current state of the team or group using the team effectiveness model you have selected.
  • Develop a strategy for helping the selected team or group become more effective by strengthening aspects of their performance as a change team.
  • Describe specific practical and actionable activities for improving the team.

Your presentation should be developed to support a central idea, with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics as expected of a business professional.

Deliverable Format

Your supervisor’s boss requests that you keep your presentation to 7–10 slides. He has also asked that you include one strong academic reference to give your ideas research-based context and support, but keep it to just one—there is no need for a long references list in a quick presentation such as this. Since you are preparing your presentation for upper management and other interested stakeholders, you want this PowerPoint to be well organized and readable.

  • References: Support your analysis with one academic resource from the  University Library.
  • Length: Include 7–10 PowerPoint slides (with speaker’s notes), in addition to a references slide.
  • Written communication: Demonstrate graduate-level writing skills through accurate communication of thoughts that convey the overall goals of the presentation and do not detract from the message.
  • Correctness: Use correct grammar, usage, and mechanics as expected of a business professional.
  • APA Style: You must use proper APA style for in-text citations and to list your references.

Evaluation

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies through corresponding scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Assess the complex and dynamic nature of organizational change.
    • Assess the current state of the team or group using the selected model of group effectiveness.
  • Competency 2: Analyze ways in which leaders and managers can effectively initiate, shape, and support organizational change.
    • Explain a model of group effectiveness in relation to the selected team or group.
    • Develop a strategy for helping the selected team or group become more effective by strengthening aspects of their performance as a change team.
  • Competency 3: Analyze the processes of change in people, groups, and organizations.
    • Describe specific practical and actionable activities for improving the team.
  • Competency 5: Communicate effectively in a professional manner.
    • Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for business professionals.
